Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) — Your employer pays 70% of your daily earnings (max €110/day) for up to 5 days per calendar year. You need a medical cert from day 1 and must have 13+ weeks' service.
Illness Benefit — If you're off for more than 5 days, you may qualify for Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection (currently €232/week for a single person). This requires 104+ PRSI contributions.
Company sick pay — Some employers offer more generous schemes. Check your contract or staff handbook, as company schemes often replace (not add to) SSP.

Why You Need a Sick Cert
Under Irish law, employers can require a medical certificate from day one of absence to pay SSP.
Without a valid cert, your employer may not pay statutory sick pay — and you could face disciplinary action.
